Part of the team behind the new MDR-Z1000, Naotaka Tsunoda has created a studio monitor model for the pros, getting one step closer to original sound. We bring you the story behind the development.

Our top professional headphones

Interviewer: First, I would like to ask you about the concept behind the MDR-Z1000 and its placement in the product line-up.

Naotaka Tsunoda: All headphones in the headphone line-up from Sony generally fall into the one of the two categories of monitor use or HiFi listening use. MDR-Z1000 was developed to be the top studio monitor model that satisfies even music professionals.

In search of “original sound”

Interviewer: So if the MDR-Z1000 is a headphone set fit for professional use, with high fidelity reproduction of the original sound, would it be correct to say that it plays the best in sound for the general user listening to music as well?

Naotaka Tsunoda: It is true that reproducing the original sound is definitely important as the foundation of getting a good sound. but there are different ways of understanding the concept of "original sound."

Just too good for the public?

Interviewer: So, are monitor type headphones not suitable for general users who just want to enjoy music in a non professional setting?

Naotaka Tsunoda: Among music lovers, there are many individuals who prefer a monitoring type sound, close to the sound the artist produces. For this new product, we developed the ZX series for users who want to enjoy a monitoring type sound in a more casual, "every day listening ” environment,” including outdoor use.
