The Open Planet Ideas initiative

At Sony, we believe technology has a key role to play in solving environmental challenges. Open Planet Ideas, developed with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), was a chance for like-minded individuals to share and grow ideas on how existing technology can be repurposed for new environmentally beneficial applications.

What is Open Planet Ideas?

Open Planet Ideas is an online platform for sharing, developing and sourcing ideas aimed at tackling some of the world’s most important environmental issues. From ideas for design, engineering and sustainability to bright ideas for tackling environmental concerns, Open Planet Ideas invited people to work together to spark ideas, develop concepts and share inspiration.

How bright ideas came to life

Open Planet Ideas began with the online community posting ideas, swapping photos, stories or videos, and building on each other’s ideas. Based on the most popular themes discussed by the online community, our expert panel developed a final brief and invited people to respond with concepts for solving their environmental challenge. The most viable concepts were selected by the community and a panel of top experts from Sony and the WWF and taken forward to examine their technical and environmental viability.

The Open Planet Ideas final concept is being developed with Sony

Developing the final concept

The final concept chosen to be taken forward is a clever idea for an application that matches local people with local projects. Through using the latest geolocation and gaming technology, it will be designed to make volunteering quicker, easier and more social. In doing so, it has the potential to bring many new people to volunteering and change our communities and environment for the better.

The concept is now being developed by its creator, Paul Frigout, and Sony engineers. The intention is to develop and pilot the software with third parties and release it as a ‘white label’ application for any organisation to use.
