NEX 6 apps unavailable

I just got my nex 6 today. All in all it is a nice camera, although i am used to DSLRs. I was really amazed by the wifi capacities of this camera but..... i cannot use the apps by the simple reason that they cannot be downloaded in the region i live right now (Czech republic). So i am wondering, should i just go and return it or wait for some miracle to make the sony apps available in Prague? : Anyways, i feel really disappointed after spending 1000 Euros...

A99 error messages?

I have had my A99 for around 2 weeks with no hitches until today!

It was working normally and then a clunk noise and the following message on screen

CAMERA ERROR TURN CAMERA OFF THEN ON

I tried turning off and on but the switch had no effect and the message stayed on the screen! The only way to get rid of the message was to undo the battery grip and take the camera battery out and put it in again!

It worked normally for a little while then happened again!

I have took a few shots since the second time and up to now it not done it again as yet!

Not impressed have to admit and wonder if anyone come across this problem on there A99?

UPDATE!!

This has happened yet again today after half hour of use so it obviously something wrong with the camera? (different lens and no battery grip today) Hopefully I am going to get it swapped out for a new one?

I will leave this here for others though in case it happens to anyone else?

Rear right thumb grip has come off

The rear right hand fake leather thumb grip has come off my A57. It started to loosen soon after I bought the camera and has been getting worse ever since. Yesterday I took the camera out of the bag after a day at a nature reserve, and there it was, gone.

Can you get these replaced? Is there an alternative? What adhesive would work to keep the replacement longer?

SLT-A57 in Movie Mode - Help please!

I have an application where I want to use my SLT-A57 camera in Movie Mode.

The application is a golf swing analysis package from V1.

The application recommends a frame per second rate of 30f/s. The specification as I read and understand it, quotes 25f/s for MP4. Nothing is mentioned for AVCHD.

I am currently discussing with V1 the possibilities of using the AVCHD format. The software is a few years old but still works with my computer operating system (W7). It would seem that AVCHD is not listed with the formats that can be used although on initial discussions it may be possible to download/install the necessary codecs, (whatever they are!), for AVCHD to work.

So can anyone explain what the frame rate is in AVCHD?

HVL-F60M overheating and useless support

I'm a professional photographer and have found the new flash to shutdown within a very short time for overheating. This hasn't happened to me with the HVL-F58AM or the Minolta 5600HS before.

I need a solution and I need it NOW!!!

Preferably, I would like to be able to turn of the protection and use my own common sense, but there is no instructions as to whether this might be possible. I know when the Nikon SB900 had similar issues when launched they do have the facility.

Trying to get support from Sony is like trying to pull teeth. All I get is completely irrelevant answers and, at the moment, I'm hanging on the phone waiting for 'an agent to be with me shortly'.

Is there anyone at Sony who can help, or does anyone know a dirct line?

NEX-3N Anti-Dust Features?

It is not clear what anti-dust features, if any, the NEX-3N has. Does this camera have a charge protection coating and electromagnetic vibration as other NEX cameras, or not?

Options to power A77 from 12v battery?

I don't think Sony make a voltage regulator of any kind to allow the A77 to be powered from a 12v battery. I shoot time lapse overnight and can't always get enough time to finish the job on batteries.

I'm considering a DIY power supply out of desperation. Can anyone tell me how to get hold of something without invalidating my camera's warranty? Is that even possible?

Warning - alpha 300 power up problem!

While in the middle of a holiday I dropped the battery from my alpha 300 onto the floor when removing to recharge. After recharging the camera refused to power up. As the camera lives by my side all the time I bought a cheap point and shoot for the rest of the holiday and bought a used body from Ebay. This worked perfectly until I put the battery I had dropped into it. Then my new camera would not power up!

I cured the new camera with a hard reset (take out battery and memory card, switch on and hold shutter for 60 seconds). This did not cure the original camera. I tried this several times and it seems the the battery I dropped appears to infect other cameras with the 'non power up' infection.

Moral: Don't move batteries from camera to camera!

There's no point sending my original camera back to Sony as they will charge more just to look at it than a used body will cost.

There is a lot on the internet about Sony power up problems, perhaps why Sony seem to be losing ground in the market place. Shame as I have had good service from my four previous Sony models.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I am struggling to use a remote shutter bulb with my A37

Hi there,

This is my first play with a decent digital camera. I am trying to do long exposure astro photography, both using a conventional lens and also using a telescope adapter.

However, if I turn the flash off, and try to use a remote shutter bulb, the damned thing does nothing.

Would anyone be so kind as to treat me like a complete muppet and explain the settings I would need to use to be able to take night shot photos please?

Also, I do have a slight issue using the telescope adapter as the viewfinder and the LCD display will not show what what I am looking at......

Low Fps on recording movies with Sony A37

The specifications says it can record movies with a resolution of 1080i at 60FPS

But, when I access the properties of the file generated by the camera, I can see only 29fps on specifications. What´s wrong?

A77 and wireless flash

Hi all,

Wondering if anybody can help please?

I'm due to upgrade to A77 shortly and need to use wireless flash but not with the on-camera flash as the trigger.

Currently own a F42AM and know this won't work as a wireless on camera controller. However, if i bought a F58AM, will this work as an on camera flash and controller with my F42AM as a wireless? Also, if i bought another F42AM could i use F58AM on camera and 2x F42AM off camera wirelessly?

When are Sony going to introduce a decent range of accessories for the relatively new NEX3N in the UK? While I'm at it, how can Sony justify the astromical price for a spare Sony battery? A new battery from Sony is about 23 percent of the cost of the complete camera.

Arguably Sony do not make a great selection of adaptors and lens to enable true high magnifation table top images, thats why the interchangeable lens system on the NEX is great. Using aftermarket adaptors I can use my Olympus systems and combine great lens systems with great NEX 7 electronics. The perfect solution to a difficult problem, you might think, not so.

Unfortunatly, the only way to trigger the camera without causing camear shake is via the IR remote. In Macro photography the business end is the back of the lens with lots of clutter, lighting and staging at the front end. Now when you take that perfect shot you have to somehow contrive to get the remote reflected into the camera front end and that is not so easy.

So please Mr Sony can you provide me with a replacement trigger button that has a corded screw adaptor or provide a second IR sensor at the rear of the camera, either will do !

For a camera that has potential for professional status this very basic trigger placing is sorely missed, at least by me.

A37 - 60i is actually broken 30p

Summary: I have a Japanese A37, up to date firmware. I can select movie recording at 24p or 60i. Movies recorded in 60i appear interlaced, but they are actually more like 30p with out-of-step fields. The specifications are incorrect since it appears this camera does not shoot 60-anything per second.

Has anyone else noticed this issue? Does it affect cameras from other teritories?

To reproduce:

Film anything moving horizontally, use a double-rate deinterlacer to give 60p and there will be near duplicate frames, this wouldn't happen if the output was really 60i.

Detail (a bit hard to explain, if you're familiar with interlacing you should understand and be able to test):

60i should record one half-height image every 1/60 second and interlace these into full-height images at 30fps. But the A37 records one full-height image every 1/30 second, splits it, then re-interlaces it out-of-step (top-field of frame 2 matches bottom-field of frame 1). This gives an interlaced "look" but it's actually just a kind of "broken" 30p with out-of-sync fields. With true 60i you can deinterlace to get 60p because there are 60 different snapshots per second to start from (use a good motion compensated deinterlacer). With this broken 30p you cannot do that, the best you can do is recover correct 30p.

It's disappointing that the camera doesn't appear to meet it's published specs. Although I don't shoot movies with the camera often, I was hoping to use a high quality deinterlacer to give 60p output (I personally prefer higher frame rates). I am hoping it's a firmware mistake and not a cynical attempt to make fake 60i just to bolster the spec sheet.

Remote firing of NEX6 bracketed shots

Is there any way at all to shoot a set of bracketed shots using either an IR remote or self-timer or Playmemories mobile?

There appears not to be, and this is a huge oversight, there appears no way to be able to take a set of bracketed shots without a high risk of introducing camera shake, because you have to hold the shutter relase for the whole set of exposures.

I even bought the Bracket Pro app, but even this won't let you fire off the shots remotely either.

Please Sony fix this in either firmware (preferable) or within the Bracket Pro App (pretty easily, I would imagine, just add a option for a 2 or 10 second delay after pressing the shutter to allow the camera to settle)

Also is there any way of introducing some more functionality into the Play Memories mobile apps on smartphones? I would happily pay for an app with much more remote control features, comprehensive bracketing and intervalometer functions.

The NEX6 is a great camera and it's a real shame it is being let down by badly implemented software and firmware.

Why do Sony not embed serial number and shutter count in EXIF data?

Hi, I'm very happy with my A77 and hopefully on the way to a A99. One of the worst aspects of the A77 and presumably most Sony DSLRs is that Sony 'refuse' to embed the camera serial number and shutter count into the EXIF information. Oddly, they are the ONLY DSLR manufacturer to take this position. Why is it so important? Well the serial number comes in very useful in tracking the camera (or more precisely) the images taken with it, if and when your camera is stolen. You will see on this page from a tracking website, how, as a Sony owner you are at a huge dissadvantage:

any camera with serial number in EXIF data is a supported camera, many websites use this data for tracking, there is no reason for it to be missing. If Sony really are expecting professional photographers to 'switch' to Sony systems, they really need to get their act together on this one.

A similar exclusion is the Shutter Count, again, this can easily be checked from a Nikon jpeg by opening in Preview on a Mac, and going to 'tools' show inspector. The shutter count is under 'Nikon' the serial number is under 'EXIF'. I expect one of the resons for Sony 'hiding' this is that some multi-frame technology is just that, multi-frame, i.e. takes 6 to 8? images to produce one picture, so when and if it comes to re-sale of the camera, your shutter count will be much higher than is normal. That's not a bad thing, you just need to be aware of it when using these modes.

Switching from Nikon to Sony has cost me quite a bit, it's great to see Sony trying to get Pro's on board with some superb hardware, as a corporation, Sony need to 'get real' to the normal expectations of photographers when purchasing high-end equipment. There really is no excuse for Sony to be the only manufacturer that doesn't embed this information.

NEX 5RL failing to update

Hello, I'm having trouble updating my newly bought NEX 5RL from firmware 1.00 to 1.01. I'm going through the process but can't get past the 'camera resets' phase, it keeps freezing. Nothing happens when I press OK, I have to take the battery out to restart the camera and use the Task Manager on my PC to shut down the update program. Any help would be appreciated, Cheers, Mark.

A65 showing white bands top and bottom of screen

When I press the shutter button half way I see white translucent bands on the top and on the bottom of the screen (both eyepiece and LCD monitor). Sure I never saw it before.

Any idea what is causing it?

I did in fact correct this problem by using the 'intialise' function and reset everything to default values.

But where did it cone from?

HDR on Alpha

I found no answer in the Owner's manual or on the internet to the following question:

when taking photos in the HDR-mode with my A-37, the camera records 2 images, 1 with D-R off (so-to-say a "normal" picture) and 1 HDR-picture ( the picture I actually want). Is this normal and a "must", or can I change it in the set-up, so that the camera takes only the HDR picture. Meaning, that I get only a HDR-picture when I want one and not bundled with another "normal" picture.

I use also a Canon G12 and there I get what I want, when set to HDR simply 1 HDR picture.

Cleaning the mirror on A77V

The mirror on my A77 has what appears to be a small spot of grease on it. This appears on photos where it is on an area of bright sky as an out of focus grey spot. Can anyone suggest how to clean the mirror without damaging it? The only cleaning instructions in the manual refer to cleaning the sensor.

It is set in Aperture mode, but I can't focus and none of the buttons will respond. I have tried taking the battery out, putting in a fully charged battery and also tried a 'soft reset'. But there is no change.
