Milestone and Sony Professional collaborate to improve reliability of IP surveillance system with the “Edge Recording” solution

May 10, 2010

Birmingham (IFSEC 2010), May 10th, 2010 - Today Milestone Systems and Sony Professional announced that the Edge Recording solution becomes available at the end of the summer, 2010. Sony Professional Solutions group & Milestone worked together to determine the formats and recording & retrieving protocols, and realized the seamless process between the recording of IP or camera side storage and monitoring and recording of XProtect Sever side.

“Milestone and Sony shared the same concern of how to improve the reliability of IP surveillance system. The Edge Recording was the solution. We had intensive engineer-to-engineer collaborative work to develop this solution since last year.”John Blem, CIO and Co-Founder, Milestone Systems

The Edge Recording Solution that Milestone and Sony Professional Solutions group are developing is quite a unique solution. XProtect server can retrieve recorded video and audio with the same codec, image size, fps and bit rate as live stream of IP camera via RTSP or HTTP. As the result, the Edge Recording solution will expand the choice of end-user and installers when designing their surveillance systems which requires high reliability.

Backup and failover

Edge Storage will work as the stand-by storage of recoding server. IP cameras can automatically start recording video and audio when network has disconnected, application has failed or recording server has restarted for maintenance. After the network and system has recovered, the XProtect sever can retrieve the missing part of the video and audio files from IP camera side storage.

Wireless network environment

In wireless network environment, network connectivity is sometimes unstable and IP camera can easily lose the network connection to the sever, and live streaming from the camera will be lost. Edge Recording solution has the ability to record video into the camera side storage and XProtect server can sequentially playback video upon network recovery.

Recording under low bandwidth environment

Under the low bandwidth network environment, users sometimes find it difficult to have real time streaming with adequate resolution. In such case, it is more efficient for users to transfer video from camera side storage during off-peak-hours such as night, except videos with important events.

“With Edge Recording solution, Milestone and Sony provide the answer to overcome the risk of system failure in IP surveillance system. This solution can dramatically reduce the risk of losing video stream or recording caused by system failure, such as network disconnection, HW equipment or application failure. I’m sure this solution will accelerate IP migration even faster” said Henrik Friborg Jacobsen, Co-Founder & VP Strategic Alliance, Milestone Systems.

“We believe this Edge Recording solution will strengthen the value of Sony IP camera in the high-end market, such as City surveillance, Gaming, Banking, Transportation and Utilities where high reliability is required. Also, this solution will further encourage the adaption of IP surveillance systems to the Retail and SMB market where bandwidth is not always sufficient” said Simon Nash, Senior European Marketing Manager, Video Security for Sony Professional.

The Edge Recording solution will be available with Sony’s generation 5 camera line-up and Milestone XProtect Corporate. The official release timing of this solution is scheduled for the end of summer, 2010.
